Organizations increasingly rely on Microsoft Azure for a range of data services and applications. For companies already invested in Microsoft technologies, Azure provides a natural platform for centralizing enterprise data.

For instance, a manufacturing company might use SAP ERP to manage its supply chain while relying on Azure for IoT-based factory monitoring. By merging SAP data with IoT sensor logs in Azure Data Lake Gen2, the company can analyze machine performance in real-time, predict failures, optimize maintenance, and minimize downtime.

Azure Data Lake Gen2 offers the scalability needed for such scenarios. Its seamless integration with other Azure services makes it a practical choice for organizations aiming to derive more value from their SAP systems and other enterprise data.

What is Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2?

Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 is a purpose-built cloud solution for storing vast volumes of data, optimized for analytics. Built on Azure Blob Storage, it combines tiered storage with automated scalability and offers deep integration with IT frameworks for identity, security, and governance. Its compatibility with operational data stores and warehouses makes it a natural fit for enterprises looking to efficiently manage and analyze their SAP ERP data alongside other critical datasets.

Core Tools for Moving Data from SAP to Azure Data Lake Gen 2

Azure Data Factory (ADF)

Primary Function: ADF is the go-to tool for ETL, supporting direct data extraction from SAP to Azure Data Lake Gen 2. It offers native connectors for SAP ECC, S/4HANA, and other SAP systems, enabling secure and reliable data transfer.

Data Transfer Modes: It supports both batch processing and scheduled pipelines, making it suitable for regularly moving SAP data into Data Lake Gen 2.

Why Use It: ADF provides scalability, flexibility, and cloud-native capabilities tailored to large-scale data movement, making it the most efficient way to transport SAP data into Azure Data Lake.

Azure Storage Explorer

Primary Function: Azure Storage Explorer is a versatile tool that enables users to manage and manipulate unstructured data stored in Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2. It allows for easy ad hoc data transfers from local or VM environments to Azure.

Key Capabilities:

  • Upload Data: Users can directly upload files and folders from their local system to the Azure Data Lake, facilitating the transfer of SAP data files, such as CSV or Parquet formats.
  • Folder Organization: Azure Storage Explorer allows users to create a structured hierarchy within the data lake by creating file systems and organizing files into folders.
  • Data Management: Beyond uploading, users can also download data from Azure Storage to local systems, move files within the storage account, and delete unnecessary data.

Why Use It: Azure Storage Explorer is particularly beneficial for users needing to perform manual or occasional data uploads to Azure Data Lake Gen 2. Its intuitive interface simplifies the management of data, making it accessible even to those who may not be familiar with more complex ETL tools.

Method 1: Step-By-Step for Moving SAP Data to Azure Data Lake Gen 2 Using Azure Data Factory

To export SAP S/4HANA data into ADL S Gen 2 with Azure Data Factory (ADF), you can:

  1. Create a linked service in Azure Data Factory:
    1. Go to the Manage tab and select Linked Services
  2. Leverage ADF: Click New: Azure Data Factory
    1. Search for SAP and select the SAP HANA connector
    2. Configure the service details.
  3. Test the connection
  4. Create a data flow in Azure Data Factory
    1. Use a CDS view as the basis to provide information from the source tables.
    2. Define the copy process from the source dataset to the sink dataset.
    3. Set the delta execution.
    4. Insert the data flow into an Azure Data Factory pipeline

3. Load data into ADLS Gen 2 : Execute the pipeline manually or schedule it periodically

Optional: You can also use the ODBC Driver for ABAP to load data from an SAP system into an Azure Data Factory pipeline and from there into ADLS Gen 2.

Method 2: Step-By-Step for Moving SAP Data to Azure Data Lake Gen 2 Using Azure Storage Explorer

File-Based Integration This method leverages Azure Storage Explorer to upload data files generated from SAP into Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2.

  1. Export Data from SAP: Use SAP Data Services or any other extraction tool to export your SAP data into a file format suitable for storage (e.g., CSV, Parquet, or Avro). This creates structured files containing your desired data.
  2. Install Azure Storage Explorer: Download and install Azure Storage Explorer on your local machine or a virtual machine. This tool allows for efficient management of your Azure storage resources.
  3. Create a File System: Open Azure Storage Explorer, connect to your Azure account, and create a new file system (blob container) in your Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2. Organize your data with folders as needed.
  4. Upload Files: In Storage Explorer, navigate to the newly created file system and upload the data files you exported from SAP by right-clicking the folder and selecting the upload option.
  5. Verify Upload: After uploading, check to ensure that your files appear correctly in the designated folder. This verifies that your data has been successfully transferred.
  6. Set Up Monitoring and Management: Utilize Azure’s monitoring tools to keep track of the uploaded data and any changes that may occur, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.

Key Challenges and Considerations

Moving data from SAP to Azure Data Lake Gen2 presents challenges such as:

  • Data Complexity: Complex SAP data structures can make extraction difficult.
  • Performance Impact: Extracting data without disrupting operations requires a delicate balance.
  • Integration Management: Coordinating multiple tools and workflows can feel overwhelming.
